The Differences in Microneedling vs. Facial Acupuncture

Curious about facial acupuncture? There are many philosophies behind treatments. At Healing Elephant, we offer both miconeedling and facial acupuncture services. Learn more about the differences in these treatments and determine which course you should pursue.

Facial Acupuncture – Promotes the natural production of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for skin structure and elasticity. Acupuncturists have utilized this knowledge in treatments for centuries. Ultra-fine, single-use needles are inserted into specific points in the face, ear, and body to help stimulate the skin’s circulation and improve collagen production, radiance, and muscle tone. Facial Acupuncture is a full body and face treatment treating both the face and the skin and addressing all the imbalances within the body that may be leading to the way your skin looks on the outside. It is a safe, effective, and non-surgical approach to healthy skin, wrinkle reduction, and facial re-sculpting.

Microneedling – Combines the best of ancient medicine with modern technology. Using a professional-grade device, we create hundreds of controlled microchannels with many tiny painlessly inserted needles to elicit your body’s innate healing response. As the needles pierce the skin, they create small wounds, known as positive microtraumas. When your body senses wounds, it goes into “repair” mode. The positive microtrauma also stimulates the production of collagen which helps improve elasticity and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. This makes skin look younger and smoother. It’s similar to microdermabrasion, but instead of using a diamond tip, needles are used. It evens out skin color and improves glow by improving the skin circulatory systems to deliver nutrients to your skin cells, helping them grow healthy and strong. A microneedling treatment only treats the face.

How Do I Choose Between Microneedling or Facial Acupuncture Treatment?

Option 1 – Book Facial Acupuncture Treatment Plan because it includes everything we do to enhance your skin. Including Microneedling. The treatment plan is 2x a week for 6 weeks and 1x per week for 12 weeks depending on what your skin concern is. For example, skin beautification needs twice a week versus skin disorders like rosacea or hormonal acne needs once a week.

Option 2 – Book only Microneedling. Once every 4 to 6 weeks.

After Microneedling treatment – Your skin may appear pink or slightly red, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically disappears after 12–24hrs. You will receive a patient aftercare kit to accelerate your recovery and results.

What are the Long-Term Expectations of Facial Acupuncture?

You may see results after one treatment which will improve over a series of 3–6 monthly treatments. Results will continue to progress for several months after your last treatment. Results can last up to 5 years.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Much like when you fall down and cut your skin, your body has a natural healing process that causes the production of new tissue — and the same works with acupuncture. By inserting needles into different points on the face or using a microneedling pen, you are creating painless micro-traumas in the tissue, which in turn tricks the brain into stimulating the production of collagen and elastin that smooths the lines and wrinkles in that area.

The added advantage of poking your face with needles: increases circulation so that your skin receives more blood and oxygen, stimulates an immune response that reduces inflammation, stimulates waste removal so that your skin heals faster, and relaxes facial muscles thus reducing face and jaw tension or relieving anxiety.

Why Do I Receive Body Acupuncture to Fix my Face?

Body acupuncture addresses the internal causes of aging and organ imbalances, which often appear on the face. If your body’s circulation is poor, sticking needles into your face will improve circulation locally but it won’t make your body produce more blood. In order to get your body stronger so that your face will benefit, we need to treat your body and your face at the same time.

Who Should Not Have Facial Acupuncture?

People who are pregnant, or who experience high blood pressure, migraines, diabetes, seizures, epilepsy, hepatitis, or coronary disease.

Not recommended for people who have had recent Botox treatments as it will cause Botox to wear off faster. However, it IS an excellent complement to cosmetic surgery.

What Does the Research Say?

Studies published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture in 1996 showed that: “…of 300 people who received Facial Acupuncture, 90% demonstrated marked results after only their first treatment.”

From August to September 2011 a pilot study was carried out at Kyung Hee University Hospital in Guangdong, Korea. Twenty-eight women aged between 40 – 59 received five sessions of facial acupuncture over three weeks. They measured participants’ skin before and after the treatments. There was a significant improvement in the ‘Moire Topography’ criteria, which they use to measure the facial contours and skin elasticity.
