Functional Medicine: Needle-Free
Your optimal health is our absolute goal
Functional Medicine determines how an illness occurs and then restores health by addressing the underlying cause of the illness for each individual.
Functional Medicine is the 21st-century scientific articulation of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The goal is to look for missing pieces of the puzzle causing poor health in order to restore optimal function. Using lab tests in conjunction with other diagnostic techniques, Herbal Medicine, and strategies around diet & lifestyle, we provide a holistic approach to total wellness. When we meet with a new patient we develop a treatment plan individually based on the initial diagnosis. Treatment may include using gentle acupuncture, non-needle techniques, and a variety of other Chinese Medicine techniques like cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, injection therapy, ear acupressure, electrotherapy, trigger point therapy, or dry needling.
We identify the root cause of your illness and guide you back to balance
As Functional Medicine doctors, we look at your entire history to identify the root causes of an illness. We like to say we are medical detectives because, unlike conventional medicine, which typically looks at only symptoms, we spend more time with you and look at your lifestyle to determine why your symptoms are occurring.
During your initial appointment we may ask about:
- A timeline of symptoms
- Digestive system
- Sleep patterns
- Amount of energy
- Exercise habits
- Nutrition
- Stressors
- Personal relationships
- Emotional wellbeing

Then, we come up with a treatment plan to manage multiple factors that may be contributing to chronic conditions. It may include an individual treatment plan based on what we identify during diagnosis. Treatment may include the use of gentle acupuncture, non-needle techniques, and a variety of other Chinese Medicine techniques like cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, injection therapy, ear acupressure, electrotherapy, trigger point therapy, or dry needling. The effect of the treatment will continue at home with herbal medicine, functional medicine supplements, Chinese Medicine nutrition, lifestyle changes, and mindset shifts. Finally, we will track the progress of treatment and adjust as needed. The functional medicine approach is different for each person since each treatment is tailored to that person’s specific illness.
Your relationship with a Functional Medicine doctor may also be different than with your primary care doctor. You can expect a more collaborative partnership: the doctor considers your input while keeping you responsible for your choices as they relate to your condition and treatment. With functional medicine, the care given is based on the system affected, not the condition diagnosed. For example, a diagnosis of depression may have multiple causes. A functional medicine doctor will research and treat each cause, leading to a personalized treatment approach.
Chronic conditions benefit from functional medicine
Anyone facing a chronic condition can benefit from functional medicine. Usually, those conditions have multiple symptoms and are more complicated to treat with the Western Medicine band-aid approach which is to give one drug per symptom. The myriad of symptoms that many of these conditions have would necessitate too many drugs which in turn cause more symptoms.
Some of the conditions we treat with a Functional Medicine approach:
- Adrenal disorders
- Allergies (Environmental and Food)
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Autoimmune diseases
- Brain fog and Cognitive Impairment
- Cardiovascular disease
- Chronic pain conditions
- Chronic fatigue syndrome and Fatigue of Unknown Origin
- Chronic Viral Recurrence
- Detoxification
- Diabetes
